teamLab Borderless Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Marks One-Year Anniversary with Visitors from Over 25 Countries. Some Artworks Transform to Summer Sceneries.

Established on the shores of Alarbaeen Lagoon overlooking the panoramic views of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Historic Jeddah, the Middle East’s first-ever teamLab Borderless museum has greeted visitors from over 25 countries ever since their opening on June 10, 2024. Among the visitors of teamLab Borderless Jeddah, over 87% accounts to local visitors. Of these, 34% are families, and over half of all visitors are under the age of 35. teamLab's artworks are continuously drawn in real-time by computer programs, constantly evolving. A distinctive feature in this exhibition is their transformation with the seasons, where the artworks transition to summer sceneries in line with the actual season. Memory of Topography - an artwork in which memories of a timeless rural mountain landscape are depicted in a space with varying elevations that visitors can move through; Forest of Resonating Lamps: One Stroke - an artwork composed of resonating light that changes based on the relationship between the people in the artwork space; and Proliferating Immense Life - an artwork where flowers repeat the cycle of birth and death, prolifeartion and extinction, changing along with the seasons. The world of the artwork changes with the passage of real time. The budding rice plants, still small in the spring, grow larger in the summer and turn golden in the fall. As time passes, the flowers also change, and the gentle breezes move in response to the behavior of people. And as the people move around the flow of air changes, blowing the rice plants or scattering flower petals in different directions. The transformative nature of the canvas and the continuous, dynamic behavior allow people to immerse themselves physically in the artwork, and the boundary between their body and the world is lost. As the shared world of the artwork changes due to the presence of each person in the space, everyone in the space begins to dissolve into the same world together. teamLab, Memory of Topography © teamLab Forest of Resonating Lamps: One Stroke - Wisteria teamLab, Forest of Resonating Lamps: One Stroke - Wisteria © teamLab This artwork, in which lamps are seemingly scattered in a random manner, is composed of resonating light that changes based on the relationship between the people in the artwork space. It is a work that expresses the beauty of continuity. When a person stands still close to a lamp, it shines brightly and emits a sound. The light spreads to the closest lamps, propagating their light to the lamps nearest to them. The light continues to flow to the closest lamp, passing through each lamp once, creating a single light trajectory that passes through all the lamps. The light created by your presence and the light created by the presence of others, will always intersect. The seemingly random arrangement of the lamps is an arrangement in which the light produced by the presence of people is continuous, and is an arrangement created for the beauty of the continuity itself. Specifically, the lamps are mathematically arranged in space so that when a line is drawn from each lamp to the closest lamp in three dimensions, it forms a single connected line (unicursal) with the same start and end points, that line becomes the trajectory of light that is beautiful. As a result, the lamp light triggered by a person’s presence will, regardless of the fact that it is only spreading to the closest lamps, always pass through each lamp only once, as if it were a single stroke. It then intersects with the light created by other people in the same space at the same time, and ultimately returns to the original lamp that was the starting point. This artwork represents a beautiful continuity of light as people freely interact with the lamps. teamLab, Forest of Resonating Lamps: One Stroke - Dappled Light © teamLab Flowers in Infinite Transparency teamLab, Flowers in Infinite Transparency © teamLab This begins when Walk, Walk, Walk, is located near the space Infinite Transparency - Layered Ultrasubjective Space. To the viewer, the other people covered in the flowers exist in the world of the artwork, and when the viewer is seen by others covered in the flowers, they also exist in the space of the artwork. Multiple viewpoints are placed in the space of the world of the artwork, and the space of the artwork around the viewpoints is cut out and flattened using Ultrasubjective Space. When this flat surface is then placed in the exhibition space in the same position relative to the viewpoints, the world of the artwork is superimposed on the exhibition space. The viewer's viewpoint is not fixed; their viewpoint can move freely not only left and right but also in the depth direction, allowing them to explore a physical perception that immerses their entire body in the world of the artwork as they walk freely in all directions. When the viewer sees other people overlapping with the work through the screen, for them it is equivalent to that person being present not only in the exhibition space but also in the space of the artwork, and the other people become a part of the work. teamLab, Flowers in Infinite Transparency © teamLab Proliferating Immense Life - A Whole Year per Year teamLab, Proliferating Immense Life - A Whole Year per Year © teamLab In the same flow of time as in the real world, flowers change with the seasons. Flowers repeat the cycle of birth and death, proliferation and extinction, changing along with the seasons. When people touch the flowers, they fall and die. The flowers are also influenced by other works, falling and dying due to other works. The world of the artwork is flattened through teamLab's concept of Ultrasubjective Space. Unlike when flattening by lenses or perspective, the viewer's viewpoint is not fixed, and the viewer's body is free to move. The wall on which the world of the work is depicted does not become a boundary between the people and the work; the flowers blur the boundary between the walls, and the world of the work is continuous with the space where the people's bodies are located. teamLab, Proliferating Immense Life - A Whole Year per Year © teamLab teamLab Borderless teamLab Borderless is a world of artworks without boundaries, a museum without a map created by teamLab. Artworks move out of rooms, communicate with other works, influence, and sometimes intermingle with each other with no boundaries, forming one borderless world.
