The Sun and the Moon: Art Inspired by the Celestial

We are honored to be part of this group exhibition at Saatchi Gallery in London.
For teamLab, the exhibition held at this gallery in 2015 holds profound significance. The exhibition, featuring artworks such as Flutter of Butterflies Beyond Borders , became the origin that led to teamLab Borderless.
This time we will exhibit artworks from our “Cognitive Sculpture” series, which appear only in the human world of perception.The materials are light and the environment; and the subject of its creation is the viewer's own body and perception.
The spheres cannot exist on their own - its existence is a phenomenon created in relation to its environment. The phenomenon created by the environment is shaped for the first time by the dynamic body and perception of the viewer, becoming a sculpture in their cognitive world.
The boundaries of the artwork are ambiguous, and its existence is inseparably continuous with the environment and perception.

Massless Suns and Dark Suns

Countless spheres of light and spheres of darkness.Each sphere of light can be clearly perceived in the space as a mass seemingly made of solidified light, however, there is no material surface boundary. The perception of the boundary between the artwork and your body is ambiguous.When you broaden your vision, purple-blue spheres made of darkness also begin to appear, as though darkness has been solidified.
If you try to touch a sphere of light, the sphere shines brightly and the surrounding spheres respond one after the other.Light does not solidify, and masses made entirely of light do not exist in the universe. In other words, these spheres of light only exist in your perception.The artwork cannot exist on its own - its existence is a phenomenon created by its environment.The work questions the notion of existence and what it means.

Massless Sun and Surface of the Sky

We do not perceive the world we see, we see the world we perceive.
A sphere of light, there is no material, such as glass, on the surface of this sphere; the sphere is made only of light. There is no material surface boundary, and the perception of the boundary with your body is ambiguous. Likewise, there is no material surface boundary in the window opening.  In reality, light cannot solidify into a spherical mass in the universe. Therefore, this sphere does not physically exist.
This is a Cognitive Sculpture that appears only in the human world of perception. The materials are light and the environment. And the subject of its creation is the viewer's own body and perception.The sphere cannot exist on its own - its existence is a phenomenon created in relation to its environment. The phenomenon created by the environment is shaped for the first time by the dynamic body and perception of the viewer, becoming a sculpture in their cognitive world.
The artwork explores the possibility of a new form of existence distinct from material existences, and questions the very nature of existence.

حول تيم لاب

"تيم لاب" هو عبارة عن مجموعة فنيّة عالمية (تأسست عام 2001)، يتم التعاون فيها بهدف التعمّق في نقاط الالتقاء بين الفن والعلوم والتكنولوجيا والعالم الطبيعي. فعبر الأعمال الفنيّة، تهدف مجموعة من الخبراء ذوي الاختصاصات المختلفة، بمن فيهم فنانين ومبرمجين ومهندسين، وأخصائي رسوم متحركة، وعلماء رياضيات ومهندسين معماريين، إلى استكشاف العلاقة بين الذات والعالم وأشكال جديدة من الإدراك.

وفي محاولة إلى فهم العالم حولهم، يسعى الناس إلى فصله إلى وحدات مستقلة يتصوّرون حدودًا في ما بينها. ولكن "تيم لاب" يسعى إلى تجاوز هذه الحدود التي تحدّ رؤيتنا ونظرتنا إلى العالم وإلى العلاقة بين الذات والعالم واستمرارية الزمن. فكل شيء قائم في استمرارية بلا حدود، في استمرارية مستدامة وهشّة وخارقة في آن واحد.

About the Exhibition

This exhibition explores how the two most powerful and enduring phenomena in the sky have inspired creativity, curiosity and belief throughout human history and across different cultures.
Occupying two floors of the Gallery and spanning nine major exhibition spaces, the show presents artworks, installations, and objects that reveal how artists have responded to the Sun and the Moon.

The exhibition unfolds as a journey through a complete 24-hour cycle, moving from dawn through daylight and then into the depths of the night.
The exhibition begins with a prologue featuring works by artists including Barbara Hepworth, and continues through Setting Sun, where works by artists such as Peter Doig are presented. Evening features works by artists including Dora Maar, and Midnight, showcasing works by artists such as Joan Miró and Paula Rego. teamLab will exhibit Massless Suns and Dark Suns and Massless Sun and Surface of the Sky in the Darkest Hours, the final chapter of the exhibition.
