teamLab Future World

Since its opening in 2011, ArtScience Museum has established itself as one of Asia’s leading cultural institutions that is dedicated to inspiring curiosity at the intersection of art, science, technology and culture. In this permanent exhibition which has welcomed close to five million visitors since launching in 2016, the creative threads that unite these disciplines are brought to life through immersive, interactive artworks by teamLab, an international art collective known for its pioneering use of digital technology as a medium for art.

Consisting of major art installations and interactive projects, it is an invitation to all to have fun, play and explore, but also to reflect on our own position relative to the world and other people.

teamLab Future World is organized into two sections: City in Nature and Exploring New Frontiers. Both sections use cutting-edge science and technology to create ever-changing, evolving environments, which visitors of all ages are invited to explore, and become part of. Taken as a whole, teamLab Future World is a place where art, science and technology meet, realizing Leonardo da Vinci's famous maxim, "everything connects".

Flow Reaches Far

When a person moves, a flow is born, and that flow creates an influence that extends far and wide. The movement of other people will likewise create a flow, coming together and creating a vortex. The vortices change along with the flow.When people stop, or if people leave the space, the flow will eventually disappear and nothing will exist in the space.
The flow in the artwork is expressed as a continuum of particles, and lines are drawn in three-dimensional space according to the trajectories of those particles. The accumulation of lines that represent the work are then flattened according to what teamLab calls Ultrasubjective Space.

Crystal Universe

Pointillism uses an accumulation of distinct dots of color to create a picture. Here, light points are used to create three-dimensional objects.

People use their smartphones to select stars to throw into the Crystal Universe. These stars are reborn in three dimensions, creating the artwork. The presence of people and their location within the work affect these three-dimensional stars, which in turn influence and are influenced by other stars in the space.
This artwork is forever evolving, changing from moment to moment due to the people in the space.

Animals of Flowers, Symbiotic Lives - A Whole Year per Year

Seasonal flowers bloom while slowly changing. Animals are born from those flowers. The flowers continue to bloom and die in an eternal cycle, forming the shapes of animals.When people touch the animals, the flower petals scatter. If people touch the animals too much, all of the flowers will scatter, and the animals will die and fade away.

This artwork is part of the series Paper Plane Music Airfield (2018-) from the educational project Future Park, which focuses on the theme of Co-Creation.

Light Sculpture - Flow is a sculpture composed of an order formed by a collection of light that flows continuously from the outside to the inside and from the inside to the outside.

The existence of an ocean vortex is made up of the same water, both inside and outside. There is no material difference. Despite this, why do we feel a sense of existence in the vortices of the ocean? We can even sense life from it.

The difference between the inside and outside of an entity, such as a vortex, lies in the order, not the material. Order creates a different form of existence from that of the material existence.

Even if the elements of an artwork are separated in space and time, when an order is formed in the parts, the individual elements may be recognized as a single entity that transcends space and time.

Future Park

teamLab Future Park is an educational project based on the concept of collaborative creation (co-creation). It is an amusement park where people can enjoy creating the world freely with others.

Sketch Umwelt World

종이에 비행기, 돌고래, 매, 나비의 그림을 그린다. 그러면 그린 그림이 눈앞에 입체로 나타나 세상으로 날아간다. 날아다니는 비행기, 돌고래, 매, 나비를 만지면 가속하거나 도망가기도 한다.스마트폰을 사용하면, 자신이 그린 비행기나 돌고래, 매, 나비를 각각의 시점에서 조종할 수 있다.
모든 생명체는 각자가 가진 지각을 통해서만 세상을 이해한다. 즉, 생명체마다 세상이 보이는 방식이 다르다. 이러한 각자의 지각으로 구성된 세계를 ‘환세계 (Umwelt)’라고 부른다. 이곳에서는 비행기를 조종하는 인간을 본떠 간단히 렌즈를 통해 세상을 보며 조종할 수 있지만, 다른 생명체를 선택하면 완전히 다른 방식으로 세상을 바라보며 조종하게 된다.
돌고래는 소리를 내고 그 반향음으로 세상을 인식한다. 금속과 플라스틱을 두드리는 소리가 다르듯, 재질의 차이까지 인식한다. 사람에게는 똑같아 보이는 생화와 조화도, 돌고래에게는 완전히 다른 것으로 인식된다. 돌고래의 눈은 빛의 색을 인식하지 않기 때문에, 돌고래가 인식하는 세계는 인간과 전혀 다른 색채의 세계일지도 모른다.
매는 동시에 두 가지 대상을 뚜렷하게 볼 수 있다. 사람은 한 가지를 또렷하게 보면 주변이 잘 보이지 않게 되지만, 매는 날아가면서도 땅 위의 작은 동물을 볼 수 있다. 조종 화면에서는 확대하고 싶은 장소를 터치하면 그곳이 크게 보인다.
나비는 수평 방향으로 344도, 수직 방향으로 약 360도의 시야를 가지고 있다. 조종 화면에서는 전방뿐 아니라 좌우, 상하, 뒤까지 포함된 시야로 조종할 수 있다.

세계와 이어지는 스케치 아쿠아리움 / Sketch Aquarium: Connected World

이 수족관에 여러분이 그린 물고기들이 헤엄칩니다.
종이에 자유롭게 물고기를 그려주세요. 그림을 그리면 눈앞에 펼쳐진 거대한 수족관에 여러분이 그린 물고기들이 나타나 함께 헤엄치기 시작합니다.물고기들은 만질 수도 있습니다. 물고기를 만지면 도망가고, 먹이 주머니를 만지면 물고기에게 먹이를 줄 수도 있습니다.
그중에서도 참치는 전시의 물리적 공간을 넘어 세계의 다른 전시의 '세계와 이어지는 스케치 아쿠아리움’이나 ‘스케치 오션’까지 헤엄쳐 갑니다. 또 지금 세계의 다른 곳에서 그린 참치가 눈앞의 ‘세계와 이어지는 스케치 아쿠아리움’의 물 속으로 헤엄쳐 오기도 합니다.

A Musical Wall where Little People Live

이 벽은 꼬마 요정들이 살고 있는 음악을 연주하는 벽이다.
버섯과 양 오두막, 기다란 얼음 막대기 모양의 스탬프를 벽에 붙이면, 스탬프가 꼬마 요정들의 세계에 나타난다.벽에 붙은 스탬프의 종류에 따라 꼬마 요정들이 미끄러지거나 점프를 하고, 기어오르기도 한다. 스탬프를 떼어내면 꼬마 요정들이 사는 세계에 그 잔상이 남는다.다양한 종류의 스탬프를 붙여나가면 꼬마 요정들의 세계가 크게 변화해 간다.
벽 위에서는 스마일 씨앗이 떨어진다. 스마일 씨앗이 스탬프에 맞으면 종류에 따라 여러 가지 소리를 낸다. 벽에 붙은 스탬프의 높이에 따라 음의 높낮이도 변화한다. 다양한 스탬프를 이곳저곳에 붙이면 벽이 음악을 연주하기 시작한다.

이 창문을 통해 은 꼬마 요정들이 사는 우주를 들여다 볼 수 있다.빛의 펜으로 선을 그리거나 빛의 스탬프를 찍어 그림을 그린다. 그려진 선은 색깔마다 신비로운 힘을 가지고 있어, 꼬마 요정들의 세계에 영향을 미친다. 찍힌 스탬프는 꼬마 요정들의 세계에 나타나 움직이기 시작한다.
노란 선은 꼬마 요정을 강하게 튕겨낸다.파란 선은 꼬마 요정을 점점 가속시킨다.핑크색 선은 고무줄처럼 꼬마 요정을 튕겨 내며, 선의 흔들림을 전한다.보라색 선은 중력을 가지고 있어 꼬마 요정을 끌어당긴다.초록색 선은 형상을 그리면, 그 형상이 움직이기 시작한다.
주변 사람들과 함께 큰 그림을 그리고, 많은 스탬프를 찍어 꼬마 요정들의 세계에 새로운 세상을 그려 다양한 힘을 부여하면, 꼬마 요정들의 세계는 새로운 세계로 변해간다.

A Table where Little People Live

이 테이블에는 꼬마 요정들이 살고 있다.
테이블 위에 손이나 물건을 올려두면, 꼬마 요정들이 뛰어오른다. 올려두는 물건의 모양에 따라 꼬마 요정들이 미끄러지거나 점프하거나 기어오른다. 다양한 물건을 올려두면 꼬마 요정들의 세계가 변화한다.

Athletics Forest

teamLab Athletics Forest is a new “creative physical space” that trains spatial recognition ability by promoting the growth of the hippocampus of the brain. It is based on the concept of understanding the world through the body and thinking of the world three-dimensionally. In a complex, physically challenging, three-dimensional space, immerse your body in an interactive world.

Aerial Climbing through a Flock of Colored Birds

‘에어리얼 클라이밍 (Aerial Climbing)’은 로프로 매달린 막대들이 공중에 입체적으로 떠 있는 공간. 사람들은 떨어지지 않기 위해 이 막대를 이용해 공중을 입체적으로 건너간다. 막대들은 서로 연결되어 있어, 다른 사람이 움직이는 막대의 움직임이 자신이 서 있는 막대에도 영향을 미친다. 선택하는 경로에 따라 막대의 배열이 달라지며, 다양한 막대의 연결 방식에 따라 각기 다른 체험을 한다.다양한 색상의 막대들은 사람이 올라서면 강렬하게 빛나며, 각 색상 고유의 음색이 울리기 시작한다. 여러 사람이 다양한 색상의 막대에 올라서면, 음색은 점점 겹쳐진다.
이 공간에는 수많은 새들이 자유롭게 날아다닌다. 새들은 사람 가까이 날아갈 때, 사람이 서 있는 막대의 색을 흡수하여 그 색으로 변한다.
수천에서 수만 마리에 이르는 새 떼의 움직임은 아름답고 신비로우며, 마치 하나의 거대한 생명체처럼 보이기도 한다. 이 새 떼는 리더도 없고 서로 소통하지도 않으며, 단순히 옆에 있는 동료의 움직임에 따라 자신도 움직이는 간단한 규칙으로 움직인다고 알려져 있다. 그러나 수백 마리의 새가 거의 동시에 일으키는 움직임을 만들어내는 생리학적 메커니즘은 여전히 미스터리로 남아 있다. 인간이 아직 이해하지 못한 보편적 원리가 존재하는 듯한 느낌을 받는다. 새 떼가 만들어내는 색채로 물들어 가는 이 공간에는 전체적인 의도가 없다. 사람들의 존재 영향을 받으며, 각각의 새가 원시적인 규칙에 따라 움직임으로써 의도하지 않은 복잡하고도 아름다운 색채로 공간을 물들여간다.

슬라이딩 후르츠 필드 / Sliding through the Fruit Field

여러 가지 과일들이 자라는 미끄럼틀입니다.
언덕에 다양한 과일들이 자라고 있습니다. 그리고 공들이 여기저기 날아다니고 있습니다.사람은 햇빛이 되어 언덕을 미끄러져 내려옵니다. 몸이 공에 부딪히면 햇빛의 에너지를 전달받은 공이 힘차게 날아갑니다. 힘차게 날아간 공이 부딪히면서 과일들이 자라납니다.공은 색깔에 따라 각각의 역할을 맡고 있습니다.
씨앗과 하늘색의 ‘물공’이 부딪히면, 씨앗이 싹을 틔워 꽃봉오리가 생기고 꽃이 피어납니다.과일과 노란색의 ‘꿀벌공’과 부딪히면 씨앗이 튀어나와 새로운 생명으로 이어집니다. 

Waterfall Droplets, Flowing Down a Slope

수많은 입자들이 떨어져 내리며 지형을 따라 흘러간다.입자는 하나일 때는 공처럼 튕겨 오르지만, 많이 모이면 물처럼 움직인다. 그리고 다시 흩어지면 또다시 공처럼 움직인다.오르막 길을 밟고 올라가면 주변에 흐르는 물방울들이 영향을 받고 튕겨 나가 흩어진다.
물분자는 하나의 분자만으로는 액체가 될 수 없다. 물이라는 액체가 되기 위해서는 많은 물분자가 모일 필요가 있다.물분자는 자석과 같은 성질을 갖기 때문에 물분자간의 결합, ‘물 클러스터’로 존재한다. 이 물 클러스터는 수명이 매우 짧으며 끊임없이 생성되고 분해되는 것을 반복한다고 생각되어진다. 그것들은 매우 역동적인 구조를 가지고 있기 때문에 물은 다양한 형태로 변화한다.
이 세계의 대부분의 사물과 생물들은 구성하는 요소의 성질의 단순한 합 이상의 성질을 통해 전체를 이룬다.

teamLab에 대해

아트 컬렉티브. 2001년 부터 활동을 시작했다. 예술, 과학, 테크놀로지, 그리고 자연계의 교차점을 학제적 접근으로 모색하고 있는 국제적인 학술적 집단. 아티스트, 프로그래머, 엔지니어, CG 애니메이터, 수학자, 건축가 등 다양한 분야의 전문가들로 구성되어 있다.
 
teamLab은 우리에게 익숙한 모든 경계에 대해 질문한다. 인간은 각자를 둘러싼 바깥 세상을 감각 기관으로 인지해 스스로와 분리하고 낱낱을 경계지어 독립체로 구분하려 한다. 현대 문명은 그런 방식으로 세계를 이해해 왔다. teamLab은 예술을 통해 감각을 확장하고 개인과 세계의 경계, 시간의 연속성에 대한 인지의 경계를 넘어설 수 있다고 믿는다. 이 세계의 모든 것은 광대한 시간 속에, 생명의 끝없는 연속 안에 가까스로, 하지만 기적적으로 존재하고 있다.

teamLab의 작품은 시드니 뉴사우스웨일스 주립 미술관, 애들레이드 사우스오스트레일리아 미술관, 샌프란시스코 아시아 미술관, 뉴욕 아시아 소사이어티, 이스탄불 보루산 현대 미술관, 멜버른 빅토리아 국립 미술관, 헬싱키 아모렉스가 영구 소장하고 있다.
